My Sister The Beak Whisperer

* Zeek The Beak *

Above, is one of my sister, Michelle's, birds. I should say, one of the 'boys' as she calls them. She has an amazing way with the feathered friends and is in the process of working with a Timneh African Grey Parrot that has a serious problem of feather plucking. Her love of these creatures and helping them, has led to her creating enrichment toys which she sells in her Etsy shop and several shops around Portland, but also donates to certain organizations that are working with birds.

If you would like to know more about what she is up to you can go check out her blog, The Beak Whisperer here.

This is the first of posts where I will be sharing blogs that I think will be of interest or helpful to some or all of you. It is something that I have been wanting to add to my blog offerings and there is no better time than the present.

There is a parrot like that living in my mums apple tree. I think he must have flown away from someones house. He talks and says "give us a kiss!" we were worried he would die in the cold weather we've had (-18) some days but he's still going! Amazing little thing!

Does your sister have any tips on how to get hold of him so we can bring him to the rescue centre?

Princess...Does the parrot remain in the same place often? If so, a rescue organization might be able to come to the location to retreive the bird. Parrots are not acclimated to live outdoors without some sort of heat source, and it may perish at any time. My best advice to you is to call a rescue organization (look one up on the web) and they will be able to tell you the best way to proceed. Please do not wait, time is of the essence for that little bird.

Keep me posted!

Princess....also, in the time you are waiting for a response from a rescue organization in your area, you could offer the bird some warm (not hot) oatmeal with no sugar. If you can get the bird out of the tree and onto a table top, fence post...etc, you might be able to throw a towel over it to capture it. Once under the towel, gently scoop the bird up and secure it in a box with ventilation holes. Then take it to the nearest vet or rescue center.

I think it is wonderful that you want to help this parrot. You might be his only hope for survival.
